I purchased the one with the AUGUST connection - because you don''t need to buy a hub with the AUGUST connection - because it comes with the lock - the AUGUST "hubs" are in the box.

HOWEVER, fair warning - I don''t know if I''m just terribly unlucky - or if I should have avoided the AUGUST version, but I bought THREE of these locks. Three. Like I mentioned above, you must connect it to a hub for the really cool features to work. And I got the AUGUST version because everything is included. But - I bought them in the spring - sometime in April I think. And I STILL haven''t gotten them to work beyond just your average ''dumb'' deadbolt lock. A big part of the problem is NO ONE knows how to install them or how to troubleshoot them. No one.

I paid for the Amazon "Professional Installation" service - I think it was $100 per lock - and the guy who came did a HORRIBLE JOB. I work at home, so I did not have time to supervise him whatsoever. I just said "hi" and "bye". But, when I finally had a chance to check out what this "Amazon Professional Installation" person did - I found he didn''t even TRY to install the hub (August). He didn''t install the tiny gizmo that you must hide across from the lock so it can tell if your door is open or closed. He didn''t do anything with the keypad. He didn''t even switch out the prior "GOLD" hardware (from our previous locks and knobs) to replace it with the included, matching silver hardware. So gold hardware on the left. The new silver lock on the right. Further, he short-cut using all the screws - only used ONE to secure it in place. So, now the lock is always crooked on the door, which looks horrible.

Then I had another locksmith come in. Unfortunately I was too busy to supervise him either. He spent about 3 hours in my house trying to figure out how to get the AUGUST hub to connect. He finally told me he was successful, and charged me $675. When I finally finished working and checked it out, I found he only got one of the three to work. The other two didn''t work. In fact, he didn''t even try to connect the third lock, I assume because he couldn''t figure out why the second one was not working. (I of course stopped the check)

Then I had #3 locksmith come out who the company promised was "tech savvy". When he got here, he said, "I''ve never worked on anything like this before, but I''ll give it a try." He wasted about an hour and a half trying to get one of the two that don''t work to work -- then finally gave up and said, "I don''t know. I give up." He didn''t charge me anything.

Now I''m trying to work on it myself. I''m a computer programmer, and I hate these types of assembly tasks. But, at least I have the sense to call customer service. Customer service is admittedly very helpful, very nice, very patent and understanding. BUT - as of today - July 9th 2019 - the locks I purchased in April still do not work. On one of the three - the keypad works. On the other two, only a physical key works. Both locks keep resetting themselves over and over and over again. Like you turned them on for the very first time every other day.

I''ve been asking Amazon to refund my $300 for "Professional Services" which were no more help to me than asking my 11 year old son to "do his best". So far, Amazon refuses to pay me back the $300.

I purchased this digital door lock because it was the only one on the market that has all the following:
1) Has a key backup (electronics can fail and being the only entrance to my condo I couldn''t afford to risk not being able to get in. If you have a house with an alternate door you could risk going completely keyless)
2) Automatic lock and un-lock functionality based on my phone presence (This lock excels at this. Just need Bluetooth turned on, which it is for my car anyway. Don''t need the application opened up. I just close the door and it auto locks and when I arrive home the door auto unlocks as I just get near it. No need to pull my phone out of my pocket or worry about having the application running. It''s really that easy)
3) Wi-Fi connectivity (allows me to be notified of anyone entering or exiting my condo as I''ve given access to neighbors for use in case of emergency. I can also let a repairman in when they call just by clicking a button in the application in my phone)
4) Keypad for people to enter code to enter (either permanent or temporarily)
5) Not too obnoxious looking for a dual electronic/key lock. Others are too industrial or just plain ugly.
I see others have stated things along the lines of it doesn''t work or its broken. I had one problem that was self-inflicted. After installation things didn''t seem to work consistently. While I could lock the door with a key, the auto lock and un-lock were unrealiable. I also noticed that the privacy button wouldn''t work. After investigating I realized the deadbolt couldn''t extend fully as the existing opening in the door jam was about 1/8 inch too shallow to allow such. As soon as I chisled it out everything worked perfectly. This is one area that Yale could have improved the troubleshooting on. While it loves to talk and tell you what it''s status is (I turned this off in the advanced settings as it is annoying after the first time), it won''t tell you anything is wrong, it just doesn''t work reliably.

The only other item that may turn people off is that you have a ''jumper'' plugged into an electrical wall outlet to manage the lock via Wi-Fi/Internet. But this is common across the industry as Bluetooth is energy efficient and Wi-Fi is not. Just imagine either running electricity to your door or replacing the batteries every day. No thanks, a small jumper device is the best solution for the time being.

I''ve been using this for 3 months now and couldn''t be happier. Haven''t had replaced the batteries yet. I''d definitely purchase again. Not that the key that comes with it is a Kwikset (KW1) and can easily be changed by your local locksmith.

This product has saved me so much time and hassle. I purchased this for our Airbnb in our in-law suite. But I’m considering purchasing one for my own front door. Originally, I purchased the Alexa/Xfinity version first, but returned it quickly after I realized the “smart” function did very little besides locking and unlocking on voice command.

I paid the premium for the August version and it’s a game changer. It was easy to install the hardware. And the software is incredibly intuitive. The Airbnb integration is incredibly streamlined and efficient. Once linked to my Airbnb account, it automatically creates temporary pin codes for the specific days the guests booked for. On the day they leave, the pin no longer works. No need to worry about keys. Or lockboxes where the code never changes. And it does everything for you! Emails the guest as soon as they book with their code and instructions! If a guest changes their dates, it updates automatically. The ONE improvement I would make to the app is to automatically delete the code after the guest’s last day, but a very minor criticism. One added bonus is we get notifications when the guests come and go!
This truly is a must have for all Airbnb hosts!! And for anyone that has cleaners, dog walkers, handy men and others coming and going from their home.

I installed the lock on an old door, and ended up re-drilling every single hole in the door and the frame, to fit this lock.
There''s a lot of tweaking and adjustments that are needed to get the lock to work well. The deadbolt must fit perfect, as even a tiny bit of friction will render the lock useless.

Yael/August include a small magnet in the kit, but there is no where in the kit, instructions, nor in the part list is that magnet mentioned. Apparently It is part of the August "doorsense" kit that allows the lock to sense that the door is not closed, or left partially ajared. Again, there''s no instructions on how or where to install it.
On the August website they show how to instal this sensor for the August locks and each lock has a specific place to install the this magnet, but not for the yale locks. None of the online videos from Yale say ANYTHING about this magnet. It''s almost a dirty little secret they don''t want you to know before you buy the lock.

I had to get tech support from Yale to explain to me how to install it.
Apparently the installation instructions are in the app, but why would anyone fire up the app before they are done with the installation?

The "Connect" kit installation took a few attempts, mostly because the really bad bluetooth range between the Connect device and teh lock it self. I had to move it around the house to find the least problematic spot. The only spot it work kinda ok it literally the other side of the wall (2 feet from the lock), and even then the app reports that the bluetooth connection is poor.

After a full day of drilling and fiddling with the lock, it does work well.

If you like the lock, you better be very handy and with a full toolbox, or get a professional to install it for you.

4 stars * * * * for the lock itself
1 star * for the instructions and documentation
4 stars * * * * for the application (Android)
5 stars * * * * * for Yale''s tech support.

To be sure, the Yale hardware is nicely packaged, easy to install, and looks great. It is however “dumb.” That’s where August is supposed to step in, providing the brains to the operation to allow users to lock and unlock anywhere over WiFi.

These are, however, two different products, and feel at best like siblings who do not get along.

The products are packaged separately within the shared outer box, foreshadowing the illusion of integration. There is little instruction regarding the software component, such as when you should install the August module (after installing the Yale hardware, but before installing batteries and the cover). If you head over to the app store, you’ll be left contemplating if you need the app from Yale, August or both (the answer is August). The accounts you create do not relate to one another, and neither one has anything to do with Nest really.

After three attempts and three factory resets the August module was still not working right, providing a confusing string of red and green flashing indicator statuses.

Don’t live alone? Adding users within the August interface is a poor user experience. I had to invite my wife twice through the app, and she had to create an account twice, logging out and back in before finally having access to our front door.

Finally, after convincing the reluctant pair to play nice together, the Yale lock appeared to submit to the whims of the August app. However as I sit here in the airport preparing to be away for a few weeks, the app no longer recognizes my front door. Is it locked? Who knows? Certainly not this dummy August.

This lock finally got it right. They problem I had with smart locks up until now is that the best software had lousy locks and the best locks had lousy software.

This Yale lock solves the problem by making great hardware - a combination lock to Yale Lock standards. Then it has a slot to plug in your choice of software compatability.

In my case I chose August since they were one of the first apps. Their module handles the connection to August''s app and service.

This finally solved everything. It connects to WiFi for remote control and Bluetooth so it has connectivity even if the wifi is down. It handles auto-open very well. First it''s optional so you can turn it on only if you are in a place where it''s safe. Second, it uses geofencing to detect location and opens when you come home. That solves the problem most Bluetooth locks have where they sometimes don''t detect your phone. Kevo in particular has lots of complaints about that, which is why I waited.

Third, you get August''s full suite of app capabilities - adding guests, adding temporary codes, etc. all from an app with a great UI.

Finally it supports Alexa or any other integration you choose. Really great choices by both Yale and August.

I have no complaint about Yale, or about this Assure model. As a stand alone lock, it works great.
The August module though.. and the August customer service.. man.. what a nightmare.
I bought this in Feb 2019, it is now Nov 2019. The lock would not work with Google Home, and would not connect to the WiFi bridge. Customer call #1 - restrat, factory reset, etc. nothing works. Call #2 - they sent me a replacement August unit, but still it didn''t work. Call #3 they sent me a replacement lock! but the lock was the wrong color. Call #4 Wait again for the correct color. Call #5 the lock is fine, it was always fine, the connect is the problem. Call #6 finally we discover what the problem is.. I have a MESH WIFI network, and it WILL NOT WORK WITH A MESH NETWORK. Excuse me? this is 2019 we are talking about, I use Google WiFi, which is amazing. Ok, FINE. So I go out and get another Router and booster from a friend, just to make sure this time. Guess what - DOESN''T WORK piece of junk hardware, only works with specific 2.4 routers, I''ve never encountered so much flakieness from a AAA hardware before.

I ordered a ZWave Plus module instead, and added the lock to Samsung''s SmartThings app. It works, I can add codes, I can adjust auto lock (AND auto unlock - which August doesn''t do, if the dare is open. You do need an external door sensor for that, but it gives you so much more control - like turning up the lights at night when the door is opened), I can ofcourse lock and unlock.

Downside - (currently at least) there is no integration with Google home when adding the lock via Zwave. But then again, I couldn''t do that either with the August module since it would not connect.

(EDIT Nov 22) I figured out how to connect to Google home. Add lock action to scene, and tiger scene from Google Assistant. Since I only care about "goodnight" also locking the door, this is over for me

UNLESS YOU DO NOT HAVE A MESH NETWORK AT HOME, and your home wifi is 2.4GHz - avoid this like fire

I''m going to break this review into 2 parts: Hardware and Software

Hardware:
If you can use a screw driver it is pretty straight forward to install the hardware. I did adjust the doors handle to give this new deadbolt the least resistance possible. The hardware seems to work flawlessly. It is very well built. I was expecting more plastic but the external parts are metallic and glass and feel very sturdy. The inside parts do have some plastic mostly for the battery and cover.

The only minor annoyance with the hardware is how you can easily lock it. You can lock it simply by touching the face on the outside of the door. This is a nice and convenient feature. I put the lock on a door that has a door closer and if holding the door open you accidentally touch the face it locks even with the door open and I''ve had the lock bang against the door frame a few times already. This is mostly just an annoyance but since it can tell if the door is open or closed they should update the software to add an option to disable face touch locks when the door is open.

Software:
The august software is over all pretty awful to setup. I''m a programmer for a living, I followed the direction and I had to go through the entire setup 3 times(opening it and defaulting it) to get to function. It is pretty easy and intuitive but just tells you to calibrate again. After going through what felt like a pretty painful setup it has worked pretty well since. Initially we set it to auto lock after 1 minute and that was too short with bringing in groceries and such. We ended up changing it to 5 minutes. Overall the software works fine but I dock a star entirely for how painful the setup was.

I purchased 2 of these locks. One for our front main door and one for inside our garage. Now with key less cars and key less locks we don''t have to dig in pockets or purses for keys.

I really liked the fact that this lock (which replaced a preferably nameless ''smart'' lock, which in turn replaced an aging Weiser ''dumb'' electronic lock) was able to be installed into the existing mess of holes on my steel clad outside door with only the use of a screwdriver in about half an hour! It really can''t get any easier than that! The lock mechanism itself is well constructed and so geared that it is light and effortless to close, both by knob and electronically. It feels as solid as a bank vault. Yale is the global consumer brand within the Swedish ASSA ABLOY Group. Both companies are well known in the industry and have excellent reputations. The particular model I chose (Connected by August) has the electronics module designed by August, which was an independent third-party smart lock. Now Yale and August are both owned by ASSA ABLOY. Unfortunately the integration of the software hasn''t been as smooth as one would hope. I''m sure future app versions will address this, but currently it''s easy to get confused by the many different apps and which item is which within the apps. Fortunately Yale''s tech support is excellent and very helpful. In fact, I originally bought the Z-Wave model because I wanted to integrate it with Alexa, but the Yale tech support person recommended that for my particular set of circumstances I should return the item I bought and replace it with this model, and was he ever right! Amazon made it very easy and a few days later I was up and running. The only thing I still have to do is clean up the damage left by the two previous locks, which, in a metal door, ain''t that easy! But, I''ll get there... The most difficult part of the entire installation was the August Connect module which connects to the lock via Bluetooth and then rebroadcasts via WiFi and also in reverse takes in WiFi and uses BTLE to talk to the lock. Problem is finding an electrical outlet that meets their specified distance (10 ft). I had one that met the distance but was around the corner and generated a "Your signal is too weak" error and the other one was line of sight but about 15ft away and it simply couldn''t reach it. Yale tech support suggested I ignore the "too weak" warning and sure enough, it worked. I was already trying to figure out how I could get an extra outlet hooked up near the door but it didn''t prove necessary. FWIW, my original Weiser worked well, but I wanted the ability to add more control so I bought a different brand which worked. but didn''t have the. Bluetooth range extender, and wasn''tf very well constructed because within 6 months some of the cast metal parts inside the lock had snapped! It is now in the recycle bin and I''m somewhat poorer but a lot better educated! Buy the best and only cry once! Pictures from L-R are outside view of installation, keypad lit up, batteries and immediately above the batteries is wher the module plugs in, the 10ft outlet location and the 15ft location.

For clarity, the Yale YRD256 comes with a very slick touchscreen with no key lock. This unit has an expansion slot just above the batteries which makes it one of the following: 1) No module installed - standalone touchpad pin lock 2) Z-Wave+ module installed - touchpad pin lock + zwave connectivity to an automation hub 3) Zigbee module installed - touchpad pin lock + zigbee connectivity to an automation hub 4) August Connect module installed - touchpad pin lock + Bluetooth connectivity to the August Bluetooth to wifi adapter. -- NOTE: The Yale x Nest lock is very similar to #4, but doesn''t have Bluetooth, and uses a nest to WiFi adapter. I was excited about the concept of using close proximity Bluetooth to unlock the doors. That way I could walk up to the door, it would auto-unlock. The problem is the range is so large (40 feet) that should I have these locks on all 3 of my doors, the entire house would unlock as soon as I pull into the garage. Not cool considering some doors, like our deck, hardly get accessed in winter. The August Connect is "ok", but not great. I had the unit configured to auto-unlock, and left it on my office floor. I was 10km from home, my phone buzzed with a "August Connect failed to unlock your door due to connectivity issues". WHAT? Why was it trying to unlock my door? I open the app, and it failed to connect to the lock. 5 stars for the Yale lock, -2 stars for August connect. You would be better off buying the Yale x Nest version if you want an app controllable door lock. If you have an automation hub, get the zwave or zigbee variant. That is a 5/5 solution.

Yale lock hardware and touch screen are fine. The smart module bluetooth works ok too. It is the August Connect wi-fi bridge that is a nightmare . Yale remote support is easy to reach but unable to provide any help to resolve the issue. They first suspect the connect bridge being deflective and suggested me to get it replaced by Amazon which I did, however, it is exactly the same issue. Now the Yale technical support suggested it must be my wi-fi router. I tried three different router with both Android and Apple IOS but still same issue. (The connect bridge wasn''t able to join the wi-fi network even the August App reported it did joined. } The August App is full of bugs and is a joke to work with . Update: after one month of hard work, finally get it working. It turned out to be bugs with August App. The August app definitely has bugs with Android , it was never able to join the wi-fi network using App on Android phone. Need to set it up using I-pad instead. It finally works but the process isn''t easy as the procedures make no sense at all. Now it is fully functioning. I can remote control the lock away from home. The auto unlock feature also works .

I purchased this lock from Amazon at a discounted price of $350+ (while the normal price was over $270) but it seems that it was the only "black" color (which I wanted) lock with connected by August. I planed to use this lock with our iPhones Now over to the fun part. The lock seems to be used previously hence when I completed the initial setup, it said the lock was now "Factory reset". In the course of next few days, it worked intermittenly. The connect bridge module was just about 3 feet away from the lock and no blockage or any objects in the between the two, yet it did not connect to the bridge and often just showed "not responding" in the iOS "Home" app. I have tried all of their instruction such as Reset the locks, login-logout of Home app; Remove/Add back the device Frustrated, I contacted the August support team and got a warm "welcome" at first. However, after a couple of emails, they ran me around the loop and repeated their instructions again and again. After a series of email (around 6-7 emails) of repeating the instruction, I ended up contact Amazon and returned the lock to save me time. After that, I purchased another lock (also this type but different color) and it works OK Overall, I am happy with the Yale lock connected by August But I am not happy with this particular services trouble-shooting experience. August, please take note of this to improve your help-desk services.
