Description

Product Description

Disrupted Realism is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism. Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. Widely published author and blogger John Seed, who believes that we are “the most distracted society in the history of the world,” has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists’ impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process. Six sections lay out and analyze common themes: "Toward Abstraction," "Disrupted Bodies," "Emotions and Identities," "Myths and Visions," "Patterns, Planes, and Formations," and "Between Painting and Photography." Interviews with each artist offer additional insight into some of the most incisive and relevant painting being created today.

Review

"I consider John Seed as the Anthony Bourdain of the art world. Traveling and taking us on a journey of visual feasts for our eyes and imaginations". - Sue Greenwood (art dealer)

"John Seed is a diamond in a coal pile, a treasure." - Dave Hickey (author and critic)

"The best thing about "Disrupted Realism" is that it doesn''t focus on facile representation. Instead, it centers on the opposite--that something remarkable happens when the so-called "real" is smeared, blurred, broken, battered, or even just a bit bruised." - Anne Harris (artist)

The visceral impact of the artist''s hand is taking center stage within the widening circle of representational art. John Seed astutely frames Disrupted Realism as a movement, which it is, in every sense of the word. - Stanka Kordic (artist)

About the Author

I was disappointed. Not a lot of "disruption" really. Just some realistic painters trying - most of them - to appear contemporary by applying some crazy technique to cover an out of date approach to painting. I flipped through the whole book waiting to experience this idea of "disruption and be inspired by something. Didn''t happen. I''m an artist. If there were really something new and worthy here I would say so.

This collection of artists branded in the style called Disrupted Realism seem a privileged lot who paint hyper realism with smears of smudged paint, really streaks of smears becoming their style connection.

Dear readers, branding has become everything! Author, art critic John Seed has nurtured artists he knows in California to paint in this style basically created by Seed himself in his role as an art critic.

The author here John Seed seems a friendly guy who has not really taught much actual art even having had 30 years of teaching within a college art department. Best I can tell he has taught art criticism, appreciation with a bit of contemporary art studies along with some art history.

John Seed has built his reputation on writing for Huffington Post and blogging his art opinions. He studied painting so many years ago in college and now that his fame as a critic soars he has retired to become a watercolor painter just as so many non-artists have become professional painters in retirement. However his fame has been built on his art criticism not on his practice of painting which remains a near blank slate.

I love this collection of artists and its attention to observation, perception, and range of figuration. The reproductions are high quality. As a painter and an educator I find it personally and professionally valuable. There are many artists that I was already familiar with in the book, but also many that I was excited to learn about. John''s writing is always insightful and his framing of the book project is right on point for so many issues important to contemporary painting. In combination with the blurbs by the artists themselves is a great tool for my paintings students of all levels. Painterly abstraction, degrees of depiction, space and place in a digital age, passage of time, disruption, tension, color, light, form---I could go on and on, it''s all there--I couldn''t recommend this book more highly. My only regret is that I can''t see all the paintings in real life, it is an inspiring publication. Thanks John!!

In Disrupted Realism, John Seed has assembled work by artists whose work, while recognizably based in realism, have in various ways moved toward a style that flirts with abstraction. Most often, the most noticeable quality these artists’ work have is a strong sense of the importance of the actual paint. The paint handling is as much or more important than the subject matter. This is a very broad survey and encompasses a wide range of styles and approaches to image-making.

The artists are organized into six categories—Toward Abstraction, Disrupted Bodies, Emotions and Identities, Myths and Visions, Patterns, Planes, and Formations, and “Between Paining and Photography”. While these categories help in pointing the reader to aspects of the artists’ work that seems to be at the core, what stands out is the enormous range of style and paint handling. The glue that holds all of it together is the set of questions that Seed asks each artist to respond to. This provides both an anchor for the book and a glance into the artists’ minds. As is sometimes the case, the artist’s ideas of what propels their work may be different than how the work presents itself to the viewer, and the gap (when there is one) is always interesting.

What stands out the most to me in looking at the survey as a whole, are two aspects. The first is that for some artists, the “disruption” happens as a result of relationship between the working method and the final work. For some, this means letting the viewer see the exploration (the many pentimenti, corrections, changes of light and color), for others it has to do with pleasure in the physicality of the paint, and for others still the process of searching for content. The second is that the much of the work aims to elevate aesthetic experience by means more usually associated with abstraction—paint handling, texture, color, and gesture.

All together, it’s a wonderful survey, beautifully produced, and joy to look at and read.

Based on a perfectly curated exhibit, ''Disrupted Realism: Paintings For a Distracted World'', at the Stanek Gallery in Philadelphia, this book of the same title by Professor John Seed brilliantly explores the fragmentation of modern life as perceived and expressed by 38 contemporary artists. From the beginning of known history, artists have helped us see and interpret the world around us along with giving us a glimpse into the future. This principle is clearly described in Dr. Leonard Shlain''s seminal work, ''Art and Physics: Parallel Visions in Space and Time''.
Professor Seed, artist, critic and curator, asks the artists featured four pivotal questions, "How and why does your work disrupt or deviate from traditional realism?" How has your work evolved and developed over time?" "What are some of the influences that have shaped your work?" "Mention something interesting about your life and background."
Along with the powerful color plates, the answers to these insightful questions give the reader the ability to connect with the artists and better understand the process of creating a work of art in our distracted "attention economy".
Definitely a must read for artists and collectors alike!

I think it''s a wonderful book to look through but not learn anything much about technique. It didn''t inspire me to try any of it, but applause for those artists who did. I''ve seen a lot of this kind of work in other books. I think however this will help in the forward quest to find new ways of making art.

I love a book about ideas, which this is; along with interesting and provocative writing and imagery. What could be better? The Forward discusses a bit about the development of an art movement , and this one in particular. John Seed’s Preface discusses his personal writing genesis and development, leading to the presentation of the show ‘Disrupted Realism’ in Philadelphia fall 2019. The Introduction provides a musing on the contemporary setting of these related artworks.
The choice of the four questions asked of each artist represented in this book is not only a simple and effective way to enter into the visual world of these artists, but also as a surprise to look at myself. As the same exact questions were asked repeatedly, I found ways to explore my own thinking on the ideas being spoken about; using the wide margins for my own notes. The color reproductions are clear, colorful, and plentiful. I took my time, several weeks or so, to peruse and allow all of the issues to settle into me. It’s a keeper in my art book library.

This is one of the most exciting and inspiring art books I''ve purchased in recent months; Californian art commentator John Seed has coined a name for a whole movement that has been slowly building internationally based on realist painting that represents the visual discombobulation of the modern world. This is not a school or a particular style; rather it is the response of individual figurative artists to our times – as a painter myself, I find it personally enlightening as it quantifies some of the developments my own work has been taking in recent years and in the work of other artists I''ve known about, both in my own circle and abroad. The book is very well illustrated with large full-colour plates presenting the work of 38 artists; each artist contributes a short interview about their work and influences. This is an excellent and highly recommendable volume for anyone interested in current figurative painting; it finally gives a name to developments in serious art that have been ongoing for several decades and are now emerging centre-stage. Do use the “Look inside” option above, and check out the YouTube videos about the Stanek Gallery exhibition.

The key question explored is: "How has fragmented modern life - the most distracted generation ever - influenced art?" Work by 38 artists is presented to show how painting reflects the subjectivity and disruption of life in this century. Personal favourites include: D''Ospina, Louis, Kordic, Monks, Kringen and Opdenbrouw. Instagram searching reveals many more excellent examples of current artists whose work I hope will be featured in future volumes. Real craft skills are back (Realism) but disrupted in many interesting ways unique to each individual artist. Perhaps coinciding with the death of Postmodernism and its (misguided) general rejection of excellence / craft skills. This is a timely book highlighting a developing movement that is gathering momentum. Recommended.
